Sure               enough,               alcoholism               has               negatively               affected               humankind               for               centuries,               including               the               1970's,1980's,               and               beyond.

Whether               behind               the               wheel               of               a               vehicle,               inside               a               bar,               or               elsewhere,               driving               one's               life               away               has               become               the               literal               outcome               of               consequential               substance               and/or               drug               abuse.

Unbeknownst               to               many,               alcohol               is               considered               a               "drug"               and               classified               as               a               stimulant.

Fortunately,               AA               (Alcoholics               Anonymous),               Al-Anon,               Alateen,               and               other               anti-drinking               organizations               have               put               many               alcoholics               and               their               affected               loved               ones               on               a               successful               path               toward               a               brighter               future.

Across               the               world,               many               sobriety               groups               are               conducted               in               almost               every               city               imaginable,               as               these               can               be               accessed               through               their               main               home               pages,               which               are               listed               at               the               end               of               this               article.
As               mentioned               in               a               previous               story,               1970's               -               1980's:               Cruising               For               A               Boozing,               a               Shell               gas               station               mechanic,               "Joe,"               had               no               shame               in               exploiting               his               alcoholic               mannerisms               in               public.

The               problems               of               alcohol               beverages               continues               to               plague               society,               even               in               present               times.

As               the               most               recently               available               statistics               indicate,               in               2010,               there               were               more               than               3               out               of               100,000               Americans               killed               in               drunk               driving               accidents.

After               The               Century               Council               was               founded               in               1991,               the               rate               of               drunk               driving               fatalities               per               100,000               nationally               decreased               48%               from               the               day               of               the               organization's               founding               to               2010.

Moreover,               NHTSA               (National               Highway               Traffic               Safety               Administration)               claims               that               in               2010,               there               were               32,885               Americans,               who               died               in               traffic               crashes.

When               factoring               in               drunk               driving               contributors,               at               least               10,228               out               of               32,885               fatalities               were               attributed               to               driving               under               the               influence               in               the               United               States,               which               is               31%               of               all               traffic               deaths               in               the               same               year.

However,               the               "good"               news               is               that               since               NHTSA               first               began               recording               alcohol-related               statistics               in               1982,               there               has               been               a               52%               decline               in               DUI               traffic               fatalities               of               21,113               in               the               United               States               from               that               year               forward.

In               1999,               an               organization               called               "Teen-Anon"               was               formed               for               adolescents,               who               either               abuse               alcohol               or               drugs.

One               important               thing               to               note               is               that               when               one               attends               either               a               meeting               for               alcoholism               or               drug               usage,               he/she               must               bear               in               mind               that               it               is               not               considered               proper               to               mention               the               opposite               at               each               meeting.

For               example,               when               attending               an               AA               or               NA               meeting,               it               may               be               considered               rude               to               discuss               alcoholism               at               an               NA               meeting,               or               vice               versa.
After               the               tragic               death               of               her               13-year-old               daughter               in               California,               Candice               Lightner               founded               MADD               (Mothers               Against               Drunk               Driving)               during               1980,               which               is               based               in               Irving,               TX.

During               the               years               before               MADD               (Mothers               Against               Drunk               Driving)               and               other               anti-drinking               organizations               tried               empowering               people               from               alcoholism,               Shell               gas               station's               mechanic,               "Joe"               had               no               qualms               in               closing               shop               for               the               night,               in               order               to               drive               to               the               nearest               bar               for               a               few               more               drinks.

At               the               end               of               his               shift,               "As               The               Shell               Sign               Turns"               finally               stopped               being               in               the               gas               station's               limelight,               as               Joe               frequented               B.

G.

Bar,               afterward.

To               this               day,               one               must               often               wonder               whatever               became               of               Joe               and               his               drunken               habits,               as               he/she               asks,               "Did               Joe's               drunk               driving               ever               put               anyone               else               at               risk,               or               worse               yet,               cause               serious               injuries               or               death?"               Each               day               Joe               worked               at               Shell               gas               station,               he               always               seemed               to               crave               just               "one               more               drink               for               the               road,"               like               so               many               others               throughout               time.

Until               society               successfully               combats               alcoholism,               more               people               shall               continue               driving               their               lives               away               on               the               roads               and               elsewhere.
