Lazaro Yoshioka's blog ::Attorney: Arizona Can't Implement Immigration Law Without Racial Profiling
The voice is clear and the volume is loud. State Senator Leader Russell Pearce runs Arizona. Last fall, Pearce said that the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment, which addresses citizenship, was not meant to apply to the children of people who live in the United States illegally. "This is a battle of epic proportions," Pearce, Republican, said at a press conference in Arizona. "We've allowed the hijacking of the 14th Amendment." [1] Russell Pearce is the instrumental force behind SB 1070, Arizona's immigration bill and he has made it clear, he will not stop fighting immigration until the state is free of illegals and the state government is in control of everything from birth certificates to the distribution of healthcare, abortions, education and anything else that the state government provides or is responsible for. The governor has handed the senate leader the reigns as a favor she '˜owed him for getting her elected. State Sen. Russell Pearce (R), the main author of the measure, says Brewer owes him for helping her get elected. "I think, out of fairness, the governor would have to admit that if it wasn't for 1070, she wouldn't be elected," Pearce told 3TV's Mike Watkiss Tuesday night. "I know other folks ran on 1070. Nationally, folks ran on 1070. I had three governor candidates call me to do calls for them and support them, not because I'm Russell Pearce, but I'm the face of 1070." [2] In the meantime, two groups have begun recall petitions on this man. They are trying to remove him from office as he is now responsible for 6 million Arizonians rather than just those who elected him in his district. Taking the Senate President position has lifted him into the spotlight for these recalls as the statement from the first group "Somos Republicans" who state: "We find Russell Pearce's overt disdain for the United State's Constitution to be indicative of his inability to govern as prescribed by his job description and the oath he took to regain his seat in the state Senate." The second group, Citizens for a Better Arizona is a coalition of concerned citizens committed to improving the quality of life of all Arizonans. The Recall Pearce Project was created to improve leadership and address concerns that affect those in Arizona. Senator Russell Pearce has exploited the politics of fear, hate, and division to champion bills and policies that have been detrimental to Arizona and the United States. We need to move Arizona in a more progressive direction." It is likely these two petitions will be combined and purged of invalid signatures before a recall election is announced by the Secretary of State who indicated a total of 7,756 signatures by May 27 but will attempt to seek as many as 15,000 signatures. This group includes leaders of domestic-violence-prevention organizations, labor unions and immigrant-rights groups. Brian Barabe, a member of the non-partisan faith-based group East Valley Patriots for American Values, called Pearce "too extreme for Arizona." "We call upon the state Senate and the House to take a new direction and reject Senator Pearce's policies of hate, fear and division," Barabe said. Chad Snow, an attorney, Arizona native, Republican and a member of the Mormon Church, also criticized Pearce. "Russell Pearce doesn't represent the values of the majority of Arizonans, Republicans or members of the LDS Church," he said. Randy Parraz, a Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate and is leading the group, said if Pearce continues to focus on immigration and guns instead of jobs and education, the group may consider a recall effort. "We will not tolerate his behavior," he said. "There will be consequences." If both groups are successful in gaining the required signatures, the petitions would be combined to ensure no signatures are lost in the process.
